How to clean and maintain wicker?

Wicker tends to be durable and resilient ✌🏼 , but requires regular cleaning and general care to be in its best condition. natural wicker will last longer if stored away from direct sunlight and humidity (to the extreme in both cases). Cleaning is the best way to keep it beautiful and especially in good condition, but cleaning methods vary somewhat for natural and resinous materials.

Clean and repair a handmade natural straw bag in 7 steps:

    • Prepare your straw handbags or wicker basket for safe cleaning

Colored straw bags can be sprayed with dyes which are easily removed during cleaning and repair.

Check the colorfastness of the handbag on the inside edge or bottom of the handbag, before wiping it down entirely with a damp cloth.

To maintain the shape of the bag , fill the inside with tissue paper before cleaning or repairing the handbag. Check if there are not several compartments.

    • Dampen a white cloth with lukewarm water

Squeeze carefully to remove excess water. Gently wipe the round bag with the damp cloth to remove dust from the surface.

    • Create a soapy mixture to remove dirt

Mix two to three drops of soap in a bucket filled with warm water to begin cleaning your handbag and removing a stain.

    • Dip a white cotton cloth or sponge

Wring water from the cloth until the soft material is damp to the touch. If the cloth is too wet, the straw purse will absorb the excess water and create a permanent stain.

Apply the suds from the soapy water all over the straw purse with the cloth and let it work. To avoid tearing sensitive straw fibers, avoid vigorously scrubbing your big bag.

Rinse the white cloth again in cold water to remove any soapy residue. Wring out the cloth to make sure the material is soap-free.

Blot the purse with the cloth to remove the soap residue.

    • Lay the purse to the side

Wipe gently and in the direction of the fabric of the straw handbag; do not try to wipe against the grain of the straw purse. This could damage the straw fibres.

Don't forget to wipe down the entire straw purse with the clean cloth.

    • Let the wicker rattan dry completely

Place it on a table or in a well-ventilated place. Let the straw handbag dry for at least 12 hours and you can admire its shine.

Once the purse is completely dry, remove the tissue paper from the bag. You are now ready for the repair.

    • Repair tears in your straw purse with rubber cement and fabric

For straw bags with liner, repair a small tear with the cement. Coat the damaged part with cement inside the purse on the back of the tear.

Place the fabric inside the tear. Press the fabric against the torn straw purse to seal for 15 seconds.

    Additional tips:

All this is valid for all rattan objects / furniture .

Never immerse your straw purse in water.

For tears in your handbag that cannot be repaired at home, send the handbag to a professional. For stubborn stains, including marks from ink pens or liquid makeup oil, take your straw handbag to a professional handbag repair shop.

To brighten the color and renew the shine of dark straw handbags, rub them with a dark cloth soaked in alcohol, dilute them with a quarter of the amount of water, then lightly buff them with a piece of dark velvet.

    Resin Wicker Cleaning

You can use the same cleaning methods for natural wicker on resin wicker , vacuuming with a brush and spot cleaning with a sponge, Marseille soap and hot water. But if your resin wicker is really dirty or full of dust after the off season, you can give it a deep clean by throwing it out. If necessary, rinse it with a hose, then scrub it with a soft brush and soapy water, then rinse again with the hose. Allow to dry completely before using your wicker.

    Wicker Furniture Care

    wicker furniture

The best way to care for natural wicker and resin furniture is to keep it clean and dry. Vacuum periodically with a brush attachment to remove dust and pollen as needed. Keeping wicker clean extends its life as dust and other organic matter can easily collect in the crevices of the weave and cause mildew like with rattan chairs , which leads to fiber degradation and eventual decay. (natural wicker). For the same reason, it is also important to clean up spills and stains as quickly as possible.

Never sit on a damp wicker chair as you may cause it to sag.

Although most wicker furniture is designed for the year-round garden, it can become brittle in very cold weather and more springy in very hot weather. Therefore, using the furniture in these extreme temperatures can cause premature wear. Additionally, excessively humid weather can lead to mold, especially with natural wicker.

All rattan wicker furniture will last longer and retain its color better if kept under a patio roof or other covering and not exposed to direct sunlight. Sunlight can damage the natural fibers of wicker and cause fraying. Resin wicker is also damaged by direct sunlight, despite what manufacturers may claim; sunlight damages all plastic.

If your piece of furniture is not protected by a hanging shelter, you can prolong its life by covering it or moving it to a more protected place in rainy weather and in very hot or very cold weather.

Finally, inspect the weave of the wicker from time to time to make sure it is tight and has no large gaps due to shifting. If you find any signs of shifting, simply push the weave back into place with your fingers.

    Material used in wicker

There are a wide variety of types of materials used in making wicker.

There are four main types of organic material used for wicker : rattan , reed , willow , and bamboo , with rattan being the most popular. Rattan, which is the thin stem, has many uses in making bags.

Bags made from these organic materials should not be left outdoors, as humidity and excessive sun exposure can deteriorate these materials. This can make the bags look very bad in a very short time, as the materials dry out or fray.

However for wicker furniture (outdoor)  you will find that wicker usually has aluminum frames. Synthetic or artificial fibers are used to weave these pieces of furniture. Aluminum, synthetic vinyl, and resins retain the look of wicker, but are much stronger and will last longer outdoors in the face of sunlight and humidity.
